Best GOTS-Certified Clothing Brands in 2026 Q for Quinn™

Best GOTS-Certified Clothing Brands in 2026

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the most comprehensive certification for clothing made from organic fibres. It covers the entire supply chain; from the field to spinning, dyeing, and sewing the finished garment, and requires every step to be independently audited annually. A brand holding a GOTS certification has proven its organic claims are not just marketing language.

'Organic' is not a legally protected term in fashion. A brand can print 'organic cotton' on a label without any independent verification because, in most markets, the claim is unregulated. A GOTS certification solves this. The Global Organic Textile Standard requires at least 95% organic fibre content, prohibits toxic dyes (including azo dyes), formaldehyde, chlorine bleach, PFAS, and heavy metals throughout the entire supply chain, and backs all of it with an annual on-site audit by an independent certification body.

How We Rate: The Skin Safety Score

Every brand is evaluated across three pillars. For this guide, the GOTS certification is the baseline requirement. Brands are additionally assessed for OEKO-TEX Standard 100 finished-product testing, social certifications, and supply chain transparency.

Pillar

What We Measure

Why It Matters

Fabric Purity

Percentage of organic or natural fibres, GOTS certification scope (full brand vs selected products), OCS coverage.

GOTS requires ≥95% organic fibre. Check whether certification covers the entire range or only selected lines.

Chemical Safety

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 on finished garments, azo-free dyes, PFAS/BPA policy, formaldehyde levels.

GOTS restricts chemicals in processing. OEKO-TEX independently tests the finished garment,  both together is the gold standard.

Transparency

Named factories, annual audit published, supply chain traceability, Fair Wear Foundation membership.

GOTS requires annual audits. Brands that additionally publish factory lists go beyond the minimum.

What the GOTS Certification Actually Covers

GOTS is issued by one of four accreditation bodies: IFOAM, Soil Association Certification, Control Union, or OneCert. Annual on-site inspections cover every stage of production. For a label to display the GOTS logo, every operator in the supply chain, from the cotton gin to the sewing factory to the distributor, must hold their own GOTS scope certificate. You can verify any brand's current GOTS status at https://global-standard.org/certification-and-labelling.

What GOTS Covers

What It Requires

What It Does NOT Cover

Fibre origin

≥95% certified organic natural fibre. Grown without synthetic pesticides, GMOs, or synthetic fertilisers.

Individual finished-product chemical testing (OEKO-TEX does this).

Processing chemistry

Prohibits azo dyes, formaldehyde, chlorine bleach, PFAS, and heavy metals in dyeing and finishing.

Performance claims such as stretch, moisture-wicking capabilities, durability.

Social standards

Living wage requirements, no child labour, freedom of association, safe working conditions per ILO standards.

Whether a brand is B Corp certified or carbon neutral.

Supply chain traceability

Every operator from cotton to garment must hold a GOTS scope certificate.

Whether the brand publishes factory names publicly.

Annual renewal

Certification expires annually; audits must be passed each year to maintain the label.

Historical compliance, a brand can lose GOTS certification if they fail to recertify.

FAQ: GOTS-Certified Clothing Brands

What does GOTS-certified clothing mean?

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification means a garment contains at least 95% certified organic natural fibres and was processed through a supply chain that prohibits toxic dyes (including azo dyes), formaldehyde, PFAS, heavy metals, and chlorine bleach at every stage; from cotton field to finished garment. It also requires fair labour conditions per ILO standards and annual on-site audits by an independent certification body. You can verify any brand's GOTS licence number at global-standard.org

What is the difference between GOTS and OEKO-TEX?

GOTS covers the full supply chain; it verifies the cotton was organically grown and that no harmful chemicals were used at any processing stage. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests the finished garment for over 1,000 harmful substances. They answer different questions: GOTS asks 'how was this made?' and OEKO-TEX asks 'is the finished product safe to wear?'. The gold standard is both: GOTS from farm to finished garment, OEKO-TEX as independent finished-product testing. Learn more in our article on OEKO-TEX certification.

How do I verify if a brand is genuinely GOTS certified?

GOTS certification must include a verifiable licence number. Ask the brand for their GOTS licence number and check it at global-standard.org/find-certified-products-and-organisations/licensees. If a brand claims GOTS without a verifiable number, the claim is unverified. Also check that the GOTS label on a garment includes the certification body name (such as Ecocert, Soil Association, or Control Union) and a licence number, this is required by the GOTS labelling standard.

Can a brand claim GOTS on some products without being fully GOTS certified?

Yes, and this is an important distinction. A brand can hold GOTS certification on specific product lines without all products meeting the GOTS standard. Always check for the GOTS label on the specific garment you are buying, not just on the brand's website. A brand that 'uses GOTS-certified cotton' is different from a brand that holds a GOTS Scope Certificate, the latter means the entire supply chain for those products has been audited, not just the fibre origin. Check our article on How to Tell If Fabric is Really 100% Organic Cotton

Is organic cotton the same as GOTS certified cotton?

No. There are different types of cotton. There is a huge difference between regular cotton and organic cotton as well. Organic cotton refers to how the fibre was grown, without synthetic pesticides or GMOs. GOTS certified cotton covers the organic fibre origin AND the processing chain, meaning the dyeing, spinning, sewing, and packaging must also meet strict chemical and social standards. Cotton can be organically grown but processed with toxic dyes or formaldehyde, which would fail GOTS certification. For the highest skin-safety standard, look for GOTS certification rather than 'organic cotton' alone.
