The Ultimate Guide to Finding Your Perfect Socks

Socks seem simple until you’re standing in front of a dozen options wondering why one pair feels perfect and another ends up forgotten in a drawer. Height, weight, and material all play a role in how socks look, feel, and perform. This guide breaks it all down so you can choose the right sock for your day and lifestyle.

Sock Heights

Ankle

Our lowest-cut sock, designed to sit right at the ankle for a barely-there look.

Best for: Sneakers, low-tops, warmer weather.

Quarter Socks

A mid-height option that hits above the ankle for a bit more coverage.

Best for: Walking, sports, extra heel and ankle coverage for less friction.

Crew Socks

A classic, higher-rise sock that offers full coverage and an easy everyday fit.

Best for: Cooler weather, boots, styling with outfits.

Sock Thickness

Sock weight affects cushioning and comfort more than just warmth. Choosing the right weight can change how your sock feels all day long.

Lightweight

A lighter feel, perfect for hot-weather and sweat-prone feet. These styles are typically our most durable and great for everyday wear. Our Lightweight Merino-Cotton Socks are beloved as a ski sock because of the warmth of wool and the lightweight fit.

Midweight

Features terry cushioning for added comfort and impact absorption. Ideal for sports and active days, though slightly less durable than lightweight styles.

Heavyweight

Fully terry-cushioned for maximum warmth and softness. Best for cold weather, and cozy days. Less durable than our lightweight style.

Sock Materials

Material affects softness, breathability, and performance. Choosing the right fabric can make a huge difference depending on what you're looking for.

Organic Cotton

Ultra-soft organic cotton is grown without harmful chemicals, making it gentler on skin and better for the environment. It's renowned for its breathability, softness, and safe for sensitive skin.

All of our organic cotton socks are GOTS certified. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is a supply chain certification that tracks certified organic cotton from the farm, through dyeing and manufacturing, all the way to the finished garment.

It’s often considered the gold standard for organic textiles because it goes beyond fibre claims alone and covers the entire process, including processing, dyeing, manufacturing facilities, and strict social and environmental criteria across the supply chain.

Q for Quinn is certified with Ecocert Greenlife under licence number 256894, which can be verified in the GOTS public database.

Organic Cotton-Merino Wool Blend

Blended socks combine the softness of organic cotton with the performance benefits of merino wool. You get a balance of comfort and breathability, with a performance edge.

RWS (Responsible Wool Standard) applies to all of our wool products. It covers wool farming, animal welfare, land management practices, and traceability through the wool supply chain.

How to Choose the Right Socks

If you’re not sure where to start, think about:

  • Your shoes: Lower shoes pair well with ankle or quarter socks, crew socks are great for boots.
  • Your climate: Lightweight for warmer days, heavier options for cold.
  • Your skin: Natural fibres like organic cotton and merino are best for sensitive skin. If you've never tried a merino wool sock and want to see if it could be a good option for you, opt for an organic cotton merino wool blend.
  • Your activity level: More movement often means more cushioning (midweight) or moisture control (merino wool).

No matter the height, weight, or material, a sock should stay in place, feel comfortable, and move with you. A well-designed sock won’t dig in, slide down, or lose its shape after a few washes.

Our socks are sized more generously. When in doubt or in-between sizes feel free to size down and use our sizing chart as reference.

FAQs

We've added a size guide to every product page in order to assist in helping you find the perfect fit! We also have a women's underwear fit guide and sock size guide you can use as helpful resources. Our socks typically have 3 types of weights - lightweight, midweight, and heavyweight.

For hot weather and high-energy activities, we’ve found our Lightweight Styles to be a really great fit! These styles provide minimal insulation and are often made from breathable materials just to keep your feet cool throughout the day.

Our Merino wool lightweight socks offer great breathability and moisture-wicking properties - helping to prevent overheating and blisters.

For more moderate activities and slightly cooler weather, we typically recommend any of our Midweight styles. These offer a really great balance of insulation and breathability - making them extremely versatile for different and changing conditions.

Our Midweight merino wool socks provide an excellent blend of comfort and temperature regulation, perfect for just about anything you have planned for your day.

Finally, we’ve designed our Heavyweight styles with cold weather and low-intensity activities like hiking specifically in mind. These provide the maximum amount of both insulation and cushioning - keeping feet warm and comfortable in even the harshest of conditions. A great example of this would be our Organic heavyweight socks, offering an exceptional level of comfort and warmth when the weather takes a turn for the worst.

Since some styles will include a small logo on the cuff, we've made sure to include this in any product photography just so it's clear from the product page. If you're interested in styles that don't include this, we've created a collection just for you: Organic Blank Socks.

Our 100% cotton socks are made from 100% cotton fabric. They do include a small amount of polyester in the elastic thread around the cuffs and in the thread at the seams. We have tried to maximize the natural content without losing the functionality of it staying on and breaking at the seams too easily. This fits differently than our other socks due to the lack of elastane in the fabric and will have a looser, slouchier fit - if that won't work for you we recommend our 98% or 97% cotton blends which will provide a more typical closer fit.

The best socks for sensitive skin are made from GOTS-certified organic cotton, free from dyes, synthetics, and harsh chemicals. Seamless designs can also help reduce irritation. We recommend our undyed organic cotton socks if you're looking for a gentle option.

Undyed socks are made without any dyes or color processing. They reduce exposure to chemicals, making them ideal for people with eczema, allergies, or highly sensitive skin.

High-quality merino wool socks are soft, temperature-regulating, and often suitable for sensitive skin. Look for responsibly sourced, chemical-free wool to avoid irritation.

Wash socks in cold water, avoid harsh detergents, and air dry when possible. This helps maintain softness and prevents shrinkage.

Socks should fit snugly without slipping or squeezing. The heel should align with your heel, and there should be no bunching at the toes. Use our sock size chart if you're unsure about sizing. We also have a size chart on each product page.
